Beef...It's what's for dinner!
23rd March 2006
Hey everyone:

Well, the storm from last journal entry has calmed although I, personally, still don’t feel as relaxed as I did before it all happened. I think it’s just something I will have to live with for the rest of the season, which is about a month or month and a half away, depending on how far we make it in the playoffs. Our team is dangling by a string, it seems. Our starting right side hitter, Elisa Togut, sprained her ankle a few weeks ago, but fortunately she is back now and playing very well. Both of our starting outside hitters are injured and we are unsure of their date of return – cross your fingers it is sooner rather than later because without both of them it just makes our playoff hopes that much more difficult! However, we are trying to stay positive and have good practices anyway. The girls that are playing in our starters’ spots are doing a good job.

On a COMPLETELY different note…The other evening I decided that I couldn’t go another day without some beef (it’s what’s for dinner, you know?) – I’m SOOOO American, right? So, I made a trip to McDonalds, which is about 30 minutes away in the city of Ancona. I was REALLY in need of that beef to drive 30 minutes to a McDonalds! For those of you who know me, you know that I am not the first one to suggest a trip to McDonalds. I never eat at McDonalds in the States, so I don’t eat there often when I am in Europe either. I prefer the bigger, juicier hamburger that we Texans make at “la casa”.

Anyhow, once I finally arrived at the golden arches, I was completely in shock to see that the line for the “McDrive” was at least 200m long and the inside was completely packed shoulder to shoulder with adults and children. What the heck!?!? Why is McDonalds so popular in Italy, the home of VERY proud Italians for their incredible cuisine? I still can’t answer that question, but I do know that McDonalds is making a big buck here in Italy, the last place in the world I could imagine that a McDonalds would be a hit.

I have always been searching for that way to make my millions – contrary to popular belief, women athletes aren’t wealthy (I’m sorry…I didn’t want to be the one to break that news to you all). I seem to always think of the coolest new inventions, and I honestly think I will someday be rich with my sleek new ideas. The only problem is that I am always a day late and a dollar short. Everything I think of is always already in the process of being made, because someone else beat me to the punch.

Of course McDonalds is nothing new to us all. It’s certainly not an invention, but it is an opportunity, and boy would I like to get my hands on a little bit of Mr. McDonalds’ creativity. Everyone seems to love McDonalds around the world, so what is the next step…

I am going to make my millions by opening a McDonalds here in Italy one day (or whatever other country I can take advantage of ). Mr. McDonald (or whatever your real name is), I commend you for your creative and successful marketing abilities! Why not make the rest of the world fat one person at a time!

And, P.S., whoever invented the idea of the Drive Thru, you are a complete genious too. I thought of the Drive Thru too…the day after you did!

Until next time...

Erin
